First Night Carolina
The night after moving in, don't be surprised if you
see hundreds of students bunched in front of the Russell House and shuttle buses lined up for blocks down
Green Street. This is part of First Night Carolina, an opportunity for freshmen to get to know each other,
and a way for USC to welcome them to the college. Students are transported by shuttle bus to a secret
location where a special program awaits them, which usually involves free food and loud music. It is a
great way for students to get involved on their first night away from home, and also gives them a chance
to meet new people.
South Carolina Traditions:
Cockaboose Railroad:
What is perhaps the most unique form of tailgating and
featured throughout the years in numerous magazines and television shows, the Cockaboose railroad has made
its way to Columbia and University of South Carolina football. Twenty-two cabooses line a railroad track
just outside of Williams-Brice Stadium - but these rail cars don't move and they certainly aren't something
you would see passing by on the rear end of a train. The Carolina Cockabooses are stationary and many are wired
with closed-circuit television to watch Gamecock away games if making the trip is not feasible. "The Cockaboose Railroad"
- and it's different, it's unique, and it's exciting; and there's nothing else like it in the nation. |
Meet Cocky:
Cocky first took action at USC events in 1980 when he
came in to take over his father (Big Spur's) place. Cocky soon won the hearts off all the Gamecock fans all
over and now is one of the most recognizable figures to young and old at USC. Cocky has also captured national
attention in the UCA (Universal Cheerleading Association) Mascot Competitions. In 1986, Cocky brought home his
first UCA Mascot Championship. He continued his success in the competitions each year and rose to the very top
a second time in 1994 bringing home his second Championship.
Cocky is in his third decade as the University's spirited mascot. A bird of many feathers, he is an integral
part of Gamecock Nation, a fan favorite, and a tireless volunteer at community service events. Cocky was named
Capital One National Mascot of the Year 2004 and he is regularly a finalist. Selection was based on a combination
of popular voting and a panel of judges' rankings. The judges' criteria included fan interaction, demonstration
of good sportsmanship, and community service. An example of community service involving Cocky is The Cocky Reading
Express; USC students travel the state with their friend, Cocky, visiting elementary schools across South Carolina.
The students read to the children, and Cocky helps the children understand the importance of life-long reading.
All the children are given books to take home, reminders of their visit from Cocky and the USC students. The USC
students know they are making reading fun - one Gamecock at a time!
